My niece Holly Whitlock-Glave and great niece Lauren Glave visit this weekend to celebrate Lauren's 8th birthday.
What fun we had during this busy weekend with all the dogs/puppies.

I cannot believe I forgot to take a farewell pic of my "Googins", but hopefully new owners Mel and Sharon Ford of St. Louis, MO will e-mail of pic of them at home. Sorry you guys. So now I can concentrate on the 3 new additions to the Arley Hall Gang, Stimson, Gertie, and Lulu. They are so precious, and now I can begin to attempt some training........good luck with that I am thinking.
Soon Stimson, Gertie, and Lulu will have their own pages on the Arley Hall website with up to date photos of them. Each is so adorable and each has such a special personality, too.
Happy Valentine's Day from all of us here at Arley Hall Airedales.!

DE is something many breeders use on all their dogs.........puppies and adults. It must be human grade though, not the kind used in swimming pools DE is composed os animal shells, and it's intro into the gastroiintestinal tract eliminates parasites worms, , coccidia, and giardia if present. My puppies have been checked for coccidia, but I understand in many stubbon cases, it is DE which is used most effectively to eliminate the pesty coccidia. You can order DE on the internet, and even you, a human can use it, too. You won't have worms if you use it, nor will your dogs.
Yes, you can add canned pumpkin to firm up an otherwise loose stool, but it might be worth it trying DE with your puppy or adult dog. I personally have used it myself since I handle so many puppies and engage in perpetual cleanup.
Thought all of you would want to know about this miracle item! Let me know if you try it.

Only my little girl, "Milly" remains here from Glory's litter of puppies. Wondering if Glory will notice since she even nursed all her puppies this a.m............such a great Mom! I've moved "Stimson" and "Gertie" in with her, "Googins", too, since he leaves tomorrow as well. I am certain they'll all be happier together today since 4 puppies left for new homes today.
Check out the new families on the Glory's litter link for more info about each of them. I know these puppies will be spoiled and loved by these families. They are such sweet puppies, and my life will still not be a "cake walk", with 3 puppies here for further show evaluation. It's a far cry from the 15 I have raised over the past l0.5 weeks though.
Thank goodness today the weather cooperated, and the puppies were able to play outside in the sunshine, the first time in 3 days. Believe me when I say they, too, were having "cabin fever" staying inside. Tonight bring perhaps a first snow for these puppies to see; time will tell if the MO weather forecast is accurate; many times it is not.
Last puppy to leave from Callie's litter, "Googins" leaves tomorrow. I'll miss you, Googins.

I always have mixed feelings when the puppies leave; it is indeed a bittersweet time for me Because I had 2 littrers (unusual for me) this time, this has been a long haul for me to care for singlehandedly. We are getting through it okay, and by Monday all puppies scheduled to leave will be gone to their new homes. I keep in touch with new owners because "I just don't sell puppies" is what I tell new owners. I want to know how the puppies are adjusting to their new homes, environment, family, training classes, housebreaking, and those irksome puppy behaviors (i.e. mouthing). This can be a difficult, frustrating time for new owners when shoes are chewed, glasses, other belongings left around. I speak from personal experience. I frequently say having a puppy around forces you to have better housekeeping (lol). My husband has had so many of his belongings destroyed because he never puts things away; I don't have much sympathy for him on that note. I keep hoping he'll learn, but you cannot teach an old dog new tricks so it is said.
So far I have had nothing but good reports on the puppies who have left. Only a mention today of one "mushy" stool. It could be related to the transition to a new home, maybe that particular puppy doesn't tolerate the food as well as others, or who knows?........puppies pick up items in their mouths all the time. My recommendation......watch carefully....add some canned pumpkin to firm up the stool, and if this continues, we can discuss changing food.......gradually, of course. Remember, not every food works on all puppies, even in the same litter. It's difficult for me to know here since there are so many in their puppy run. I have had a stool check run just last week..........results.....no parasites, no coccidia, and no giardia. Keep on top of this though, and we'll find the right food together. Other fooods I recommend and I include.........Wellness kibble, NOW (a newer grain-free puppy food),l Flint River Ranch, and Solid Gold (must use C-pack with it to be nutritious enough) to mention a few. I do not recommend Iams or Science Diet foods for the record. Go to Whole Dog Journal to check out their recommendations for quality foods. They rank kibbles in February of every year. Your dog is worth spending a few more dollars monthly in order to extend his life and keep him healthy. I'm sure you'll agree. If one cannot spend at least $l.00/daily, then including a family dog is not recommended.
One more thing............please let me know what you name you dog if you change name I have given him/her. I always want to know their names. Funny, the first two puppies still have the names I gave them in the litters.

All of you will register your dogs with the AKC. I know most of you have/are purchasing a companion dog, not one which will be shown on the conformation circuit, but please............reigster your dog with the American Kennel Club. I say that because the dog registration is a critical source of revenue for AKC; they need that source desperately from registering these dogs. It is the AKC which puts on all of the dog shows you see on television along with most every other dog show.
Oh, one more thing...........I'll get your AKC application for registration to you as soon as I have them back from the AKC. That won't be for a little while though so please don't start calling me next week (lol). I'll post on the blog when I am sending them out to you so all of you will know iin advance.
Also, when you register please use the "Arley Hall " prefix for Glory's puppies. For Callie's puppies, please use "Arley Hall Texter" as a prefix on the registered name. That 'Texter" is out of courtesy to owners/breeders of sire, "Chip", Ch. Texter Chips' Ahoy. I often tell new owners......remember, the AKC registered name can have nothing similar to the dog's call name in the registered name ......i.e. my big winning stud dog was Ch. Arley Hall A. M. Broadcast Mogul, and his call name was "Imus". Arley Hall is not a registered kennel name with the American Kennel Club, just so you know., and you do not need my permission to use it in your registration.
Again, I'm hoping all of you take the time to register your dog and obtain your own official 3 generation pedigree. I have taken a vow with the Airedale Terrier Club of America to encourage all new owners to register their dogs so please do so. It will mean a lot to me and the national airedale club, too.

I just received an e-mail from "Tompkins" aka "Murphy"'s new family, and he did great all the way from here to Tulsa Airport then on to his new home in Houston. I am relieved to say the least. I always worry about my puppies; they are so important to me as most of you already know.
Although I have placed puppies with urban dwellers in the past during my suburban Chicago days, it has been quite some time since then. This nice couple came here yesterday, and then I wondered about Murphy's schedule and care while both of them worked. This is serious business having a new puppy in your family. I was relieved to hear their plans, and I believe they will work for my boy.
Just a caution though........have a plan prepared in advance of pickiing up your puppy. Have the food purchased and all supplies in order.......bowls, leash, collar, toys, sleeping area and fleece pads for sure. Kn ow where your puppy will sleep, and be patient with him.........remember, he is a little lonely, too, leaving his familiar surroundings here. I suggested to this young couple what a St. Louis fellow did last year.....hire a pet sitter to come to your 2x;s daily at first or have a friend or family look in. A young puppy cannot hold his pottying for 8 hours; that is a given. I know that can be expensive if you must pay for it, but your puppy is well worth it, and he will adjust well.
Happy to hear things are going well with all the new owners. Let's keep up the good work. Four have gone home at this time,,,,,,,,,,many more to leave over next week. I will still have the puppies I have chosen to stay with us for possible show potential. I'll still have my everloving hands quite full (lol)!
Oops, I hear them acalling me now. It's about that time since they went down for morniig nap at 9:00. My little darling puppies. I want to get them outside again since today's weather may have a snow/rain mix this afternoon. Later.

Just received an e-mail from niece, Holly this afternoon, and my little great niece, Lauren, is so enamored with the puppies, it is unbelievable. These are times when I wished I lived closeby to them. I know Lauren would like to see all the puppies before they leave, and that day is fast approaching.
Dearest niece Holly has been under the weather most of last week, so please send some prayers her way. She works so hard as a Mom (3 children), attorney working full time, wife to Kurt, and homeowner. Her plate is definitely full and it's no fun to be sick with all those responsibilities. So, dear Holly, prayers out to you to get back to tip top condition asap.
I'm hoping she will come our way very soon.............I miss her so. She's just like a daughter to me in so many ways. .

Just to let Anne Walla and Mel Ford know, the two puppies remaiming are Iggy and Googins......both handsome devils and I know way up on Callie's choices. I know all of you will be happy as can be with these boys. See you soon.

I love watching each every year............it's on Animal Planet at 3:00 p.m. Meet the players, all ficticious scouting reports on them (lol).

I had forgotten, but there is always a puppy who loves to climb over the x-pens and exit. I didn't piece it together yesterday when I found Lauren inside the house while I was working doing a final clean up for the day; and all other puppies were still in the outside pen Lauren strolled in and greeted me; I was surprised thinking I left the latches open. No, no, I witnessed her confidently climbing over the x-pen today. It is time for them to leave (lol). I am normally outside with them, but I use their outside time as my time to clean up the inside 2 pens for them undistured by climbing, nibbling puppies. FYI......just so you know, this little ritual of cleaning both areas throughly and changing bedding takes me approximately 2 l/2 hours each and every morning excluding laundry time. Indeed, Ms. Lauren takes the prize here with her first.
All the puppies are outside right now while my husband is working in the dog yard. He is using an electric rotary saw, and I watched to see their reaction the sound of it. Some were a little frightened at first, but at least two were very interested and held their ground inside the pens, just watching intently. It's good to have them exposed to lots of different sounds before they leave so they'll adapt later on.
So beautiful outside for them right now after eating their lunch. I came inside to eat a bite of lunch and finally shower since Richard is home today. A little bit of private time for me today. Enjoy your day! I'm cheering for the Pats today; how about you? Love the venue where the game is being played. I've been there before when my son was an Indiana U. student, and IU played in the NCAA Regional Basketball Tourney there.......nice place.

I want to let you know I had Glory's puppies' stool checked on several of the puppies, and results were negative for coccidia , giardia, and any parasites. That's good news, but still, I am a little concerned about the the stool being a little mushy. The vet recommended adding some canned pumpkin to their food; that will help firm it up. Haven't heard from anyone else who is concerned about stools in puppies who already left for their homes; guess I always have concerns. I have changed the puppy food ..........don't be angry please............this time to Prairie, adult chicken/brown rice formula. That has helped immensely with stool consistency, but then I have concerns about these fast- growing puppies and their protein levels being adequate. To insure proper nutrition, I am now adding about one-half can of Instinct dog food, alternating between chicken and beef flavors. They enjoy this lots and are devouring it. I don't like overweight puppies, but I want to insure good development, too. It's a fine line sometimes. So, I'll say what I often say........if yout think your puppy is a little thin, feed it more or add some goodies to it. I might add some vanilla flavored yogourt tonight to their dinner.for a special treat.

Wow, yesterday was such a busy day for me here. Gathering up 7 puppies to take anywhere, especially when they are 7 weeks of age, is no easy task. Anyway, first thing in a.m. after playtime outside and feeding, I piled all of them into the car and headed for Woof's Den and their first professional grooming. That is my real time of discovery........to really see what I have with these puppies. Wow, Rhett/Glory gave me some great puppies. There are several I would consider show prospects, too, and that is disconcerting to me since I have no show homes except for me for this litter.
Later I picked them up and we headed to the vet for final physical and first puppy vaccinations He gives a very thorough physical ........checks heart for murmurs, checks the boys to see if testicles are there, moves legs around to check knees and possible hip issues, and then the first puppy vac..........DA2PP Only! Darn if we didn't do weights. I had to wait so long with 7 puppies that I totally did not ask since we were last patients of the day. Sorry, folks.
By the time we arrived home it was nearly dark outside, and these poor puppies had little exercise for the day. So I stayed outside with them and fed all the puppies together. It was dark when we went inside. Incidentally, I was starving, too. (lol). All told, all of us stayed outside for nearly one hour. Tis tis, the life of a breeder.
I'll try to get some video of these cute, cute puppies and post later today.

Not that I am happy about this, but little "Gertie" has demonstrated her airedale instincts right here. Two night's ago, about 2:30 a.m., I was up because I heard the puppies crying. I went to change dirty papers and took Gertie out of the run to play with her mom, Callie. I then noticed she was playing with something so I went over to check it out. Lo and behold, my little angel had a very dead mouse in her mouth. Oh wow, I know we have had mice, and I guess we still do......darn it. The mouse had been dead for a while, and I am uncertain where Gertie found it downstairs, amidst my still unpacked boxes I think. So it it true, airedales in their element are hunters of all kinds of small mammals (yuck). My little hunter girl. I was just saying to my husband that we should have more cats to catch these mice, but maybe not with Gertie here (lol).

Thought I should make it official, the Arley Hall Gang welcomes both "Gertie", Arley Hall Texter Gertie Greenbean and "Stimson", Arley Hall Texter Lulu's Bean Counter to our residence. Both will make wonderful additions to our family here. So, all those who have not yet picked up their Callie puppy, you know who is available at this time. All of them are terrific puppies........not a bad one in the lot. I was so attached to Lulu, Feeny , and Willy; it was difficult to see them go to their new homes this past weekend.
This will be a busy week.............Glory's puppies have their first puppy vac on Thursday and their first professional grooming as well. They will be 7 weeks of age on Thursday.
I've had reports on the puppies who left this past weekend, and all are adjusting quite well to their new homes. Of course, I choose homes where I know they will be spoiled rotten (lol).

|
The time has come when the puppies head to their new homes. As I have said, it is bittersweet for me.......lot of joy going to the new families but my heart saddens to see them go. I become so attached to them, spend lots of time with them, and hope and pray I've done the best possible job in finding them forever homes. Three went to fabulous homes this weekend, and I feel very good about them. More to leave next weeke but for now all of us are here together a few more days.
After Espositos left, I braved it and took both litters outside to play. Wow, it was wild.......maybe too hectic, but all got along just fine. I don't think I'll intermingle again, just too much wild behavior out there. .........the excitement of bringing others there outside the individual packs I assume.

It's quite an ordeal switching puppies around so all can get some outdoor time. I did, just that today a couple of times. Both litters were outside the morning for about one hour each, and they so enjoyed the fresh, brisk air and sunshine. They went wild at times, just running all around, climbing, and playing together. It's so much fun to be there and watch them. My back, however, begins to act up with all the lifting, bending, and carrying I am doing. We had a repeat this afternoon of the 2 litters outdoor activities.
I have been remiss in posting pics of Glory's litter so here you are. They are such sweet little puppies, and soon they will be leaving here. Three of Callie's puppies leave this weekend, and here I am still in a quandry on which I choose to keep for myself! Oh well, it's called "breeder blindness', and maybe it's because I watch them and watch them and watch them again that things become blurred. I must decide before Firday early evening when the first goes to her forever home. Guess that speaks well for the new owners......when the breeder cannot even decide which puppy is the "show stopper".
|
|
I think they need fresh air and sushine, but at 30 degrees today, I think that is a bit too cold for them. I let them out in fhe large area inside in small groups......tough to keep track of them otherwise. Thank goodness I have so much equipment.......I now have 4 ex-pens strung together outside, then 2 strung together within the large run for Glory's puppies to enjoy more space in close proximity to Callie's puppies.
Although I will miss the puppies terribly. it has been a long haul, lots of work cleaning up after them, and never ending food prep, too. In a way it will be much easier when most of them leave save for those I hold back to evaluate further for show potential Of course, I keep in touch with new owners to see how the puppies are doing; I always want to know about them. Hoping I'll receive lots of updates on their progress, training wise, eatingwise, and adjustment to new families.
Thinking I am just getting to be too old to handle this many puppies (lol). I started working a 8:00 a. m this morning, never ate a thing until 3:00 p.m. and now at 4:20 I might have time for a quick shower. All my days are like this between calls, puppy laundry, actual cleaning of their areas, and caring tor the other dogs, too. My days have never been longer than these, and I must stop sleeping in the same room as they do...........I never have a good night of sleep. Sorry for the griping..........just a bad, tiring day for me.
Tomorrow all of Callie's puppies have their first professional dog grooming at Woof's Den. They will look so wonderful for their homecomings beginning next week. Friday they have their first puppy vaccination and final health exam. So momentous days for Callie's brood. Then I must make my decisions.........which to keep for myself to show and which to send to companion homes........a very tough decision with this group.

|
When Callie's litter as pretty much "down for the count" outside, I brought Glory's litter outside to join them. I had added still another exercise pen out there to enlarge the area even further. No altercations among puppies, but considering the younger litter is only l0 days younger than the older, they seem to attempt to intimidate the younger puppies. Not this time, probably since they were so tired after being outside about 2 hours, safely inside their enlarged pen. At one point intermingling did take place with some snuggling of both litters.........so cute. Unfortunately, I didn't video it this a.m........I'phone needed charging. Today seemed like a great opportunity to have everyone outside......so unseasonbly warm again.....up to 58 degrees, feeling even warmer in the sun. Guess this is a record breaking day here for temps in January. Tomorrow on the other hand may bring snow or rain so I had to seize the op to give the puppies an outdoor outing.
I'm now adding about l/2 can of Instinct canned dog food, beef formula to Callie's litter's food......they just don't eat that well now it seems. That is, they don't without my adding home made puppy formula to it. They love lapping down the liquid I make with the canned food added, leaving the whole kernels of kibble. Hopefully, they'll begin to eat better. I hate to take a step backwards to pulverizing their food. After all, they go to their homes beginning in 2 weeks. If Mom stops nursing totally, I guess they'll eat better.
Funny, yesterday, on the puppie's 6 week anniversary. Callie decidd "no more nursing", just like that. Didn't nurse them at all yesterday. Then this morning , probably feeling some discomfort, she nursed them. It usually goes like this....the dams may nurse once daily once the puppies are this age.
I'm tired myself after sitting outside with them this morning in the fresh air and sunshine. Around noon I brought everyone inside, and all of us took a little "power nap"...........I still need more.

Many of the new owners have owned dogs before, but even if you have, it's easy to forget all the necessary items needed for your puppy. Here is a list of some items I feel one should provide for the new addition: A crate, probably size Large (400), and if it seems big, block off some of it with a milk crate inside, feeding and water bowls (probably more than one water bowl for another location within your home, crate pad (I like the sheepskin type), a training collar for obedience class (check with your trainer), a 4 or 6 ft. leather lead, a doggy bed (washable of course) or cushion, toys (all kinds...rope pulls, Kongs are great, they love balls.....tennis, soccer, even footballs, soft toys which do not contain beads like Beanie Babies, a soft cuddly blanket for cuddling up during the day (they like polar fleece materail, nice music to play when they are alone (I play classical during the day, or Sirius Watercolors or Spa.....relaxing for them, dog food (puppy for now but adult kibble at about 4 months), puppy treats, training treats, if it's cold where you live, a puppy coat for cold weather, puppy pads (buy them at Value Pet Supplies for a good price), lots of paper towels for cleanup, puppy shampoo, a dog brush, dog comb, and a special place in your heart along with patience for your puppy. Other toys can be nyla bones, other chewing toys. Remember, your puppy will chew a lot at first since he is teething. Some of you may want an auto seat belt for excursions in the car, too. Or if you bicycle, there are burleighs (sp?) to attach to your bicycle. No running with your puppy, please until about one year of age.
Please, I never give Greenies, rawhides (which some dogs have choked on) unsupervised. My adult dogs love marrow bones I purchase from the butcher shop (puppies will probably like them as well).
Check out Puppy Kindergarten classes now since your puppy will be able to start once he/she has her 2nd puppy v accination......when he/she is 11 weeks of age. You want your puppy to be a family friendly addition so training is essential for a young airedale. Also, they need the socialization with other dogs outside of their pack. No dog parks or contact with other dogs until after the 2nd vaccination.
Contact your vet.......ask questions of him about vaccination protocol he recommends. I recommend Dr. Jeanne Dodds' vaccination protocol. I give only DA2PP at each of the vacs in the puppy series.......spaced four weeks apart. No matter what your vet says, the healthy guarantee will not be implemented if you administer any ofher injections other than the DA2PP I recommend. DO NOT allow your vet to administer lepto or corona vaccines either since airedales do not do well on them. No bordatella either with any other vaccine. Also, give rabies as close to 6 months of age and never at same time anther vaccination is given..........so important. I had been proven that thei is vaccination overload for a puppy's liver and auto immune system..........please, please please recognize to do otherwise is seriously jeopardizing your dogs's health. Check with your vet and see if he will give titer testing when your puppy is one year of age instead of an annual booster. Please read all you can about over innoculating.. If your vet give some explanation regarind titers, that they are not useful or something, by all means find another vet who understands the importance of limiting vaccinatiaons.
Use not peticides on your lawn where the puppy will play either. You wouldn't use them where your children play either.
That's it for now...plenty of info for this weekend (lol). If you have any questions about any of the info I have provided, please feel free to contact me. Remember to be proactive with your dog's health. After all, you are your puppy's only advocate............an important responsibility.
